STRAWBERRIES

Well, hello there! As strawberries have been trending in Pinoy gardeners on Facebook, we got curious and wanted to try if we could really successfully grow some in our tropical hot, hot, most-of-the-year-summer weather.  So, we rushed into the grocery store, looked for strawberry seeds and planted some.  We got the Yates brand which is a realiable brand as we have tried planting other seeds from the same brand before and had successful growth.

Yates Alpine Strawberry (Fragrant and Sweet variety)

The packet says, "Strawberry Alpine," botanical name, Fragaria vesca, a low growing, compact, runnerless variety which produces sweet and fragrant small strawberries.  They are easy to grow and ornamental with the added delight of being able to eat the fruit.  One packet contains 0.1 gram of seeds.  Here is what the seeds look like.  Tiny, minute seeds.

We got a plastic container and planted about a pinch of seeds and watched it grow.  Here is what it looked like after a few days.

We were very excited about this, but then birds went picking off those small leaves.  Good thing there were only seeds that were about to go up, so we still had some left.  We do have to put some net or some sort of protection for this to be able to survive those nasty birds, but first, we will just enjoy these little ones and hope that one day they will grow into bring strong plants and give us lots of fruits to enjoy :)
